Abstract

Purpose: The present study aimed to examine reality shock attributes experienced in clinical practice by novice nurses working at a hospital and explore the factors and structure influencing the experience of reality shock.

Methods: Study participants were 19 staff nurses with less than a year of practice experience who understood the significance and value of the study and consented to participate. They were interviewed in focus groups; interview content was analyzed via narrative analysis.

Results: During the process of transitioning from a nursing student to a professional nurse, the participants experienced "chaos of values", "burdensomeness in nursing performance", "disappointment at reality" and "fear and anxiety".

Conclusion: It was found that the reality shock experienced the participant nurses was not sequential in nature; rather, it was observed that their experiences in the field amounted to reality shock as they were linked to one another. These findings may be used as basic data for increasing novice nurses' understanding of and acclimation to nursing job tasks.
